Joanna Angel — Biography & Career
Joanna Angel, born Joanna Mostov in 1980, is an American adult film actress, director, writer, and entrepreneur. After studying English literature and film at Rutgers University, she returned to Brooklyn and in April 2002 co-founded BurningAngel.com with Mitch Fontaine. The site developed a recognizable alternative, punk-influenced identity and became closely associated with the growth of alt porn online. She had also previously modeled for SuicideGirls.
Through BurningAngel, Angel wrote, produced, directed, and performed in original releases for her own platform, while also appearing in more traditionally distributed adult films. Her work included several zombie-themed productions connected to the site. Earlier in her career, she worked under an exclusive contract with VCA Pictures, which ended in March 2007, and she was also represented for a time by Bad Ass Models.
Her work outside film has included journalism, publishing, and advocacy. She wrote a monthly advice column for Spin and contributed a chapter to Naked Ambition, edited by Carly Milne. In 2010, she appeared in the Free Speech Coalition's anti-piracy public service announcement on internet copyright infringement, directed by Michael Whiteacre. CNBC later included her among its 12 most popular adult-industry figures in 2011, 2012, and 2013.
Angel has also taken on screen roles beyond adult filmmaking. In 2011, she made a cameo as herself in the Adult Swim series Childrens Hospital. Her later credits include the independent film Scrapper and the ensemble musical comedy Skum Rocks! in 2013, followed by The Owl in Echo Park, the comedy series Racquetball, and the documentary Doc of the Dead in 2014. She has also appeared on Cracked.com and in Emmure's music video for "Sound Wave Superior."
